I was coming here to reply to the thread title - but when I read the text of the first post asking for Freisian language shows I can't help specifically with that (never herd of that language).
However I thought I would share what I know about seeking out non English language TV series - All 4 (a free online service and phone app) by the UK TV channel 4 (C4) has a section called 'Walter Presents' that showcases the best foreign language shows it can source from around the globe all with English subtitles. I am not sure if this service is only available in the UK due to rights issues etc., but am sure if so there are work arounds (VPN's etc.). I found this show DEUCHLAND '83 in that WP section and have now started on a French language mafia series set in Corsica.
Here's a link to the WP area hope it helps any who are interested in foreign language shows with English subtitles: http://www.channel4.com/programmes/walter-presents

  • Is it streaming anywhere? Or on Region 1 DVD?

"I don't know why more don't answer simple questions in the subject line. sigh"
On the mobile app, only the original subject line is visible if you answer a question with a change to the subject line, many users won't see it.

Have to say that against my expectations I really enjoyed it too and am so pleased it's been renewed as, despite receiving a tepid response in Germany, was well received internationally, especially in my own country, England.
On a related note the series really reminds me of the BBC's Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes series in terms of tone, style and narrative (minus the former's supernatural elements of course!).I wonder if the writers/producers of Deutschland 83 were inspired by those series as I understand that they were fairly popular in Germany.?
All that said though the series did occasionally strain plausibility with Martin battling Carlos the Jackal on a subway track (!) being particularly fantastical as well as his improbable ease in crossing the border back into the DDR near the end of the series.
Still, I loved it and that's a rare accolade from me given my general aversion to most modern telly these days (I prefer older shows generally).
    Bring on Deutschland 86!

You're right insofar as no one would say "praeparieren fuer Krieg" in Germany. You're probably wrong that people in the US would understand the sentence in German either waythe level of language education here is APPALLING!!!

Agree. If you just glance at him you get the sense that he SHOULD be attractive but then you notice the asymmetry and it throws things off. But I don't mind. Not everyone on TV needs to be perfect looking.

I didn't like The Americans. I also don't really see the similarities between the two shows - one is clearly American and the other German.
But give it a try, you might like it! if I didn't have a million other things to watch, I might give it another try but there's tons of stuff out there that is more attractive to me right now (I have FIOS, Amazon Prime, Acorn and Netflix so way more than I can ever watch!!)
