She should have been nominated for Best Supporting Actress in 1939. The nominees that year in that category were Hattie McDaniel and Olivia deHaviilland (both for Gone With the Wind), Geraldine Fitzgerald (Wuthering Heights), Edna May Oliver (Drums Along the Mohawk) and Maria Ouspenskaya (Love Affair). McDaniel and deHavilland deserved their nods but Hamilton could easily have taken the place of the other three in that category. But Hollywood and people didn't appreciate then what a classic and how iconic the film and the characters would become! Hamilton, who was actually a kind, gentle lady in real life will be forever remembered as "The Wicked Witch of the West"!
