It's a proven fact that older parents are worse parents, for many reasons, not the least of all being health reasons.
A proven fact? Proven by whom or what?
Actually it's a proven fact that the health risks by giving birth in later years (the mother being over 35) become equalled by older mothers being more responsible and carefull during pregnancies.
If you have your first child in your thirties you already run the increased risk of having a child with Down's Syndrome
Trisomy 21 (in former times called "Down's Syndome") is caused by a failure in the cell division in the early states of a pregnancy. It's a proven fact that the risk to have a child with trisomy 21 increases with the age of the mother, but there's no proof whatsoever that there is a connection between trisomy 21 and the age of the father of the child.
In fact the father's age is only in so far a factor in procreation that with the increasing age of a man the quality and the quantity of his sperms decrease. However, that doesn't mean that older fathers are a risk for the health of babies they sire, but simply that the chances of an older man to sire a child at all are worse than the chanceda0s of a younger man.
If you'd get yourself informed about how procreation works, you'd learn that nature does a rather hard selection on the man's sperms during the procress. Only healthy sperms have a chance to arrive the egg and to fertilize it. There's no known genetic disease connected to the father's age.
And for the ability of older parents to bring their children up - that's something children's psychologists are discussing about. Same say that having younger parents is better for the child while others say that a set of older parents who have already experience in life and are calmer is better.
I actually think too that one shouldn't be too old when bringing children into the world - and 69 as in Sir Michael's case seems too old for my taste. However, if I would have to choice between an irresponsible teenager for a father or an older man I'd rather take the older father.

On the topic of Gambon's mistress, Philippa Hart, him and his wife of 45 years actually split up in 2000. He nows live with Hart and they have two children together. He is divorced from his first wife after the affair, they no longer are together!
