Wilhelm Heinrich
Otto Dix
(2 December 1891 25 July 1969) was a German painter and printmaker, noted for his ruthless and harshly realistic depictions of Weimar society and the brutality of war. Along with George Grosz, he is widely considered one of the most important artists of the Neue Sachlichkeit
.
When the First World War erupted, Dix enthusiastically volunteered for the German Army. He was assigned to a field artillery regiment in Dresden. In the autumn of 1915 he was assigned as a non-commissioned officer of a machine-gun unit on the Western front and took part in the Battle of the Somme. In November 1917, his unit was transferred to the Eastern front until the end of hostilities with Russia, and in February 1918 he was stationed in Flanders. Back on the western front, he fought in the German Spring Offensive. He earned the Iron Cross (second class) and reached the rank of vizefeldwebel. In August of that year he was wounded in the neck, and shortly after he took pilot training lessons. He was di111cscharged from service in December 1918
.
Dix was profoundly affected by the sights of the war, and would later describe a recurring nightmare in which he crawled through destroyed houses. He represented his traumatic experiences in many subsequent works, including a portfolio of fifty etchings called
Der Krieg
, published in 1924

LOL!: clip of a scene from
"Oz"
in which
J.K. Simmons
as
Schillinger
blows a gasket every time someone mispronounces his name.
J.K. Simmons
: an excellent character actor! His Schillinger still sticks in my mind as one of the most evil characters in film, but when Mr. Simmons plays a sympathetic character he is almost adorable!
Noel Coward
REF. TO
Mad Dogs and Englishmen
:
"Mad Dogs and Englishmen" is a song written by Nol Coward and first performed in "The Third Little Show" at the Music Box Theatre, New York, on 1 June 1931, by Beatrice Lillie. The following year it was used in the revue "Words and Music" and also released in a "studio version". It then b111cecame a signature feature in Coward's cabaret act.
The song is especially known for the line "Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun" with which most verses begin and end
.
Quote from lyrics of
Mad Dogs and Englishmen
:
"Because the sun is far too sultry
And one must avoid its ultry Violet ray"

*This much maligned 1963 production is IMO a far better film than it's ever been given credit for. Too bad that the audiences of that time did not give it the respect it deserves. -
