How did she meet Tom Hanks?

Anyone know how the two of them met? Looking at her filmography, she was in a tv show called Bosom Buddies which I think had Tom in it and then later they were in a film called Volunteers together. Anybody know at what point they started dating or anything?

Tom and Rita got to know each other while doing the film Volunteers with John Candy. Yes, she had met him when she did a Bosom Buddies episode, but she played opposite Peter Scolari as his "match-you-by-videotape" date. Tom was in a brief restaurant scene with them, along with series regular Donna Dixon (and Tom's wife as their waitress, btw).

, i get carried away with useless trivia sometimes. I kept the episode for a long time before tossing it, for some unknown reason. Just to add more (since you asked LOL), Rita really was gorgeous in the episode, and Scolari was hopelessly smitten. However, in the restaurant, she pulled off her black cape and told the other three she worshipped the devil. They all ran "like the wind blows," and that was the end. -

Just to clarify: During the BOSOM BUDDIES episode, Tom was then married to Samantha Lewes, who (according to IMDB credits) was a waitress on the show (or that episode. I've 16d0seen maybe 2 episodes of that show - later in reruns). Donna Dixon (the other actress who also played a waitress on the show as a regular, according to credits) was never married to Tom Hanks. She later married Dan Aykroyd, & is still married to him. This I know.
Also, as I read it years ago in an interview w/Hanks (& a few times since), he was at least separated, if not already divorced, from Lewes when he 're-met' Rita Wilson on the set of VOLUNTEERS, & she was then engaged to someone else. A friendship grew & eventually Rita broke off her engagement to the other man. I remember reading this (about 20 years ago) & being struck by the circumstances - I remember wondering if I were in her shoes, if I could have broken off an engagement to be with a soon-to-be divorced father of 2 (Colin Hanks & Elizabeth Hanks). One would think that he wouldn't have been the best catch - but love prevailed. She obviously made the right choice, & they now have 2 sons of their own. Sadly, Samantha Lewes died of cancer in '02.
BTW, I think Colin Hanks also has a lot of charisma, charm, humor AND talent. I've enjoyed his performances & interviews on talk shows. He seems like a nice kid. (See him in the underrated film THE GREAT BUCK HOWARD w/ John Malkovich. He also did a nice job as Father Gill in MAD MEN - a great series.) -
