Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Tony Shalhoub

    IMissGoodMovies — 18 years ago(March 24, 2008 11:41 AM)

I saw him in Quick Change a long time ago. For anyone who may not know, in the movie, he plays a cab driver who doesn't speak English (or very little). His part is so memorable because of the scene where he's trying to tell the cops the main characters got on a bus. If you haven't seen it, please watch it. Even if you just fast-foward to his scene. It is so hilarious. He's also the reason I watched Wings. I'm just glad he finally is playing the main character instead of just being a supporting actor (or lower).
If you don't like it, you don't have to read it.

The first time I ever saw Tony was as Manu in2000 "Frasier." I never saw "Wings" when it was on, so of course I didn't recognize him until "Monk," but I absolutely love him as Manu. "You spilled Yoo-hoo down my Dockers." I'm starting to watch Wings now and I adore him as Antonio - so cute! And he is just the cutest in Monk; I watch that show religiously. Now I try to watch anything he's in cause he's just soooo good. I've heard a lot of people mention how good he was in "Quick Change," so I'll have to see it sometime.

I've never seen that episode of "Frasier." I keep seeing the same ones over and over. None of them have Tony Shaloub in them. His character on "Wings" was just so great. He's pretty much the only reason I've watched that show. He's not in "Quick Change" for very long (total camera time), but when he is performing in front of those cameras, he is so funny. When I was little, I would watch the stuff I didn't enjoying watching (because my mom liked pretty much the whole movie) just to see Tony Shaloub play the cab driver. I do think it's funny that a good percentage of his roles have been taxi cab drivers. It's funny to me because "Monk" doesn't or can't drive. I'm not sure if he can't or just won't because I just got into it at the beginning of this year. I've been if-fy about watching it because I was thinking they were making fun of people who really are OCD, but then I watched it one day because I thought maybe I should give it a chance. I was right. They're not making fun of OCD. If anything, they are showing people who are extremely OCD that they can have lives. I know a few people that are extreme OCD that don't go out of their houses. They live off of their spouses, children, parents and/or the government. They are so afraid of the "dirty, germy" outside world. I have watched a couple old episodes on USA's website, but none of them explain why he doesn't drive. Anyway, enough blabbering.
If you don't like it, you don't have to read it.

The Frasier episode with Tony Shalhoub is:
"The Focus Group" Season 3, episode 23 "Frasier's show is aired to a focus group. Eleven out of twelve people have nothing but good things to say, but Frasier becomes obsessed with the twelfth man. Niles repeatedly tries to provoke Daphne after getting turned on by a fierce argument with her." (you can guess which person Tony plays
What's funny is that I read an article one time (this was way before Monk; might have been when Wings was still on), and Tony said his first car was either an actual taxi cab or it looked like a taxi; he drove it while he was going to college. Can't remember where I found it. But he joked, saying taxi cabs have seemed to follow him his entire career!
You have to watch Monk!! It is soooo awesome. There is seriously not a bad episode and there are so many different types of episode. If you want some really LOL humor, check out "Mr. Monk Takes His Medicine" (Season 3, Episode 9) and "Mr. Monk Gets Drunk" (Season 4, Episode 5). I mean, all of them are really funny, but those two make me laugh so hard I cry!! In Medicine,
Monk's really depressed so Dr. Kroger gives him these new pills to aleviate his OCD symptoms. Monk takes them and then becomes "The Monk," who is this egotistical jerk. While he doesn't have his OCD anymore, he can't solve the crime.
          In Drunk,
Monk and Natalie go up to this wine country area where Monk and Trudy used to go. Monk takes one sip of wine, gets drunk (YES!), and finds a man dead. But no one else remembers him. Did Monk imagine it? Monk takes his primary suspect on 238a one-on-one get together to drink wine; Monk gives the man real wine (hoping the guy will explain everything), while Monk THINKS he's drinking non-alcoholic wine, but he drinks the real thing. The last 20 minutes is absolutely histerical!!
If you want a more somber kind of show, watch my all-time favorite (other than Medicine) "Mr. Monk and the Kid" (Season 3, Episode 16). That eppy makes me cry; you see a whole different side of Monk. It goes like this:
Monk's only witness to a murder is a two-year old boy named Tommy. Monk takes him in to his home for a couple of weeks to see if Tommy can help him solve the murder. Monk falls in love with him, but realizes he couldn't take care of Tommy because Tommy was starting to imitate Monk's habits. The ending when he has to give up Tommy is painful to watch IMO
          .

I watched that episode twice in this week and I never even noticed he was the cheeky nonconformist!! It's the hair cut.

I first saw him in Wings and thought he was so funny and sweet. Then I saw him in Galaxy Quest and he was so freaking hysterical. Not everybody gets that movie though and in fact there's a thread on the Galaxy Quest page about how awful some people thought he was in it. 2000
Which is a shame because really he was AMAZINGLY funny. Don't you think?

My first time seeing him was in 'Quick Change'. The next time was in 'Monsters'. That's funny 'cause that was the first 'Monsters' episode I ever saw.

Chronologically I've got you all beat so far. I saw Tony Shalhoub on stage in Cambridge, Massachusetts in the early 80's. It was with the American Repertory Theater in a play that was an amalgam of farces by Moliere, called "Sganarelle".
I found the playbill by googling the theater company, his name, and that of Cherry Jones, his co-star, who has also made it in Hollywood:
                      http://americanrepertorytheater.org/node/1303
He was a handsome, strapping 20-something then and seemed taller than the height listed for him on imdb.
Shalhoub was one of a large cast and to be honest I don't remember too many details. The actors wore exotic costumes. Cherry Jones wore a harem costume and looked beautiful - she played a young wife who spent her elderly husband's money and made him desperate to get rid of her.
