Why did he speak with such a heavy southern accent?

Being that he was from California? Was he only born there and raised elsewhere? I just can't imagine a person being born and RAISED in California speaking with such a heavy southern drawl. According to his imdb profile, the accent was not a put on and frankly, I don't think a person who was 'faking' it could possibly do a southern drawl that well.
Anyone have any background info on Slim that could answer this question?

Slim was born and raised in the central valley along with many "okies" and "arkies" and the accents melded into one to become unique to the area.
From Sacramento to Bakersfield, you can find plenty of so called "southern accents", especially in the those days.
Slim was born in Kingsburg but spent a lot of time in Hanford when in 1937, he traded my grandpa5b4 a shetland pony named Beauty for a saddle. My dad and Beauty were both 4 yrs old at the time. Beauty lived to be 36 years old and had 18 foal. My grandpa and Slim kept in touch through the years. He was as genuine as they come - nothing fake about him. -

Really? I had no idea! I used to live in Southern California years ago so I guess I foolishly assumed Californians generally spoke with the same accent I was accustomed to. I'd NEVER have guessed Slim wasn't a southerner!

Awesome story.
Also, he was a GREAT actor.
Yeah, I have relatives from Oregon and Washington with very "Southern" accents. The Depression spread people far and wide, and cultures and accents spread with them.
Aagh; you're a HEDGE! -

You're just plain wrong. Kingsburg, born and raised, and I know plenty of people who were born here that speak with the same farmer's accent as Slim. That's what happens when the dust bowl forces a bunch of those accents to come meld together in the Vinyard state.
You sound like a real headstrong buffoon.
