Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Viggo Mortensen

i would take him over almost any character, heavy, supporting actors in hollywood.
the thing and only thing that held him back from having a career like say ed harris, nicolas cage, or kevin bacon was his name. viggo mortensen. he doesn't have a bankable american name. viggo sounds like a dumb nick name and is too ethnic and mortensen sounds like a Norwegian name. he doesn't have a relatable, hollywood, american sounding name.
that's why it took him at least 16 years from '85 to '01 to finally have his big break in the first the lord of the rings films.

Could the same be said of Rutger Hauer?

maybe depends on when his career started though because he was a pretty big after blade runner made him a star.

It has nothing to do with his name, it is because he turned down the Wolverine role in X-Men, which instead went to Huge Ackman
If he took the role he would be more well-known and would be $100 Million richer.
