Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Cathy Moriarty

Doesn't it sadden anyone else that this phenominal actress has never really had a starring role? I mean, yes she's played the female lead in films, ie; Raging Bull, White of the Eye, Opposite Corners, and she's been brilliant in all of them. But I'm talking about a film where she IS THAT FILM!!
Like Sigourney Weaver had Aliens or Gorillas in the Mist, Faye Dunaway had Mommie Dearest, Sharon Stone had Basic Instict, Kathy Bates had Misery, etc.
What about Moriarty? She damn well deserves it, and what makes it even more depressing is that fact that she's such an unstoppable talent!! Even when she's playing the supporting roles in Soapdish, or Casper, or Cop Land she effortlessly steals every scene she's in. I truly hope that one day a director with enough balls takes a chance with her, it's high time she was given the truly meaty part that she deserves. What a treat that would be!!

That is a shame, isn't it? I count her among my favorite actresses and have adored her in everything I've seen/heard her inbut she is really and truly under-appreciated. 😞
I like you, Um. I like largeness

Yes I agree that Cathy Moriarty deserved a bigger career and better roles. She was outstanding in Raging Bull, really held her own opposite De Niro even when she was just 18 and if I'm not mistaken she received an Oscar nomination for her efforts. So her career couldn't have gotten off to a better start, but it seems like the roles dried up quickly. Perhaps because she's always been such an unusual and distinctive presence, with her androgynous vibe and husky voice. In some ways I imagine she would have been a bigger star in 1940s Hollywood as a Lauren Bacall/Ava Gardner type.
However she did have one excellent role after Raging Bull, in the weird little 80s B movie White of the Eye, opposite David Keith. That's probably my favorite Cat5b4hy Moriarty performance, though she's great fun in Soapdish too!
