Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Nathan Lane

He never gets the chance to show his real talents, but Mr. Lane is one of the greatest actors of our generation. He is always type cast as a loud, funny, jewish man, because that's what he does best. But what about his serious roles? I saw him as Ben Butley in Butley on Broadway and he was amazing in that. He really took on the role and thought about it and took it a different way that Alan Bates. He deserved the Tony for that.
He always gets the crappy movies no one wants to see like:
    Swing Vote
Win a Date With Tad Hamilton
    Trixie
    Isn't She Great
    At First Sight
    Life With Mikey, etc.
But if you've seen him in Butley, Nicholas Nickleby, Laughter on the 23rd Floor and The Boys Next Door he's a really good serious actor. I say that if Chris Nolan puts Penguin in the next Batman movie, Nathan Lane is the man to the cast. He needs better roles, and better movies.

I totally agree that Nathan is a tremendous actor with much more depth than his roles indicate. His early days on stage when he did a couple of Terence McNally plays indicated that. He was kind of type cast in musicals and that's what people want to see him in. But he is so much more than that.
p.s. I LOVED "Life with Mikey"

That's exactly what I mean! You know, that they even offered him the part of Tevye in the 2004 revival of Fiddler on the Roof, but he wouldn't take it because he didnt want to be seen in Mostel's shadow. I respect him for that (although he would be a great Tevye.).
I enjoyed Life with Mikey, okay. I even liked Swing Vote a little. 😉
        We miss you, Jim Henson

I liked him in Win a Date, Isn't She Great, Swing Vote, Life With Mikey, and Love's Labour's Lost.
He makes less-than-awesome movies worth watching just by being in 'em.
I perform out of love for singing, I sing out of happiness & happiness is the key to a healthy soul
