He just seems to be trapped in this personality that got him nominated for an oscar in 97'. there is a weakness around his eyes and he carries that in every movie.
All his characters are either seem to have some kind of pathetic innocence in them that is not particulary required for the role. Like his performance in Someone Like You, dull and stupid.
Perhaps he tries to channel sensitivity too many of his characters. He's never the tough guy, more of the hapless senitive charmer who the girl will be draw to and fall for.
I guess that's about all I have to say. It's just my opinion. Not to be mean I thought it should be acknowledged. -

I had the misfortune of renting a bad dvd copy of Auto Focus, but what little I saw of it definitely demonstrated a 180 degree difference between his performance inthat and Kinnear's work in As Good as it Gets. And I thought he was terrific in both pictures!
On another note, it bugs me, sometimes, when I come across posts going on and on about "Actor X being the same in every movie!" There are the Deniros and the Streeps who bury themselves in their parts, and then there are the personality actors who basically play themselves in most of their pictures. That's just the way it is, but it's usually the way most filmgoer and fans like it.
Just my opinion
Whatever you do, DO NOT read this sigACKKK!!!

Did you stop to think that maybe he's being hired to play the same kind of character over and over? Like maybe he's been pigeon holed and not given much of a chance to show his range? And yes, I do see differences in his portrayals. His performance in AGAIG was phenomenally layered, sensitive, and incredibly vulnerable and one of the most moving I've seen. Yet he was debonair and insensitive, and even a bit conceited in You've Got Mail. I do see what you're saying though about something that shows in most of his roles, but I think that is innate charm, not weakness. Sort of what Cary Grant had but in a different way and not as intense.
Certainly I could never see him playing an action role or a real toughie. He doesn't seem to have that ability to bring out of himself that macho killer instinct. But I kinda love that about him.
I've never seen Auto Focus. Don't think I've ever heard of it. Thanks to those who mentioned it. Will go look that up now.
Edit: Ah yes, I do remember now he was cast to play Bob Crane. And I do remember that I hadn't the slightest interest in seeing a film about same, even if he's in it. In fact, he's been in several I had no interest in seeing. I'm always thrilled to hear he's been cast in something I actually want to see though. He's one of my favorite actors.

I have to agree to disagree on this one. I think that Greg is one of THE most under rated , talented , & versatile actors working today. Amen to the people who mentioned "Auto Focus". Watch it. Also, in "Thin Ice" he plays a really bad guy.
One of the "problems" as well , as someone mentioned, is not Gregit's HOLLYWOOD. Greg is so great at playing the "nice guy", that they don't feel "comfortable" allowing him to play "against type". When it comes to casting a more villainous "type", I would bet my right arm that Greg is hardly at the top of anyone's list ( and I do mean there IS a literal actor's list that film makers go through!) I think he's just as handsome & capable of being at the top of that list as say Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt playing a bad guy, or one with some serious flaws ( in fact , dare I say, I admire him even more than those two put together!) Unfortunately , those guys get 1st dibs. What it's probably going to take is him producing his own project of that sort. I'm going to think positive though , & say that I believe his time will come.
