Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Rock Hudson

My theory is that back then, looks were the most important thing. Hence the "studio system" that would basically take a really good looking person and turn them into an actor. To be honest I don't know what Rock's track to stardom was, but I don't think the leading men of today can hold a candle to the stars of yesteryear in the looks department.
Another reason I think you rarely see REALLY good looking actors is today's "fashion" + the media. Most people look a lot better when they dress up, but we live in a jogging suit world. Many of the stars back then wouldn't set foot out of their homes not looking their best, but if they did, TMZ and a million paps wouldn't be waiting to get an unflattering pic. Stars were placed on a pedestal then - they were above everybody else. You just didn't see pictures of them in sweatpants at Starbucks.
Maybe there is more of an emphasis on acting now as opposed to looks - not that that's a bad thing, but I would love to see a little more really handsome, manly men onscreen. And I wouldn't mind the "illusion" that they were somehow a little different than the rest of us. Sigh.
    Laissez les bons temps rouler!

Give me a break, there are TONS of stars today who are just as good-looking,
although they admittedly are more in TV than film. In any case, I never
took to Hudson as he was dull, untalented and coasted ONLY on his looks.
Probably the most ungifted star who ever existed.

OOOOOH but I thought people back then didn't care about looks, it was all about the talent! [sarcasm]

It was about the looks and the talent. The OP didn't say talent wasn't important.

There are plenty of handsome leading men today. At his peak, Brad Pitt was beyond hot. While Tom Cruise is a bit too looney for my taste, he is undeniably handsome. I also think Jon Hamm, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Blair Underwood and Christian Bale are hot. So yeah, there are still some hot leading men out there. Just as hot as Rock was.
Also, we didn't see stars looking like "normal" people back then because the studios ran Hollywood. There were still gossip rags back then, but it was understood that photographers didn't stalk stars when they weren't "at work". The worst photos you saw back then were candid shots of stars at a nightclub, leaving divorce court or at a premiere. Studios made sure we didn't see them in jogging suits or looking less than presentable because they were the studios investment.
If anyone is to blame for stars being less glamarous, it's the paparazzi who take photos of stars just living their lives and the magazines that buy and print the photos. I suppose the public is to blame as well because we buy the magazines.

Hugh Jackman, Jon Hamm, Shemar Moore, Matthew MacFadyen. Very handsome men.

I find that the so called handsome men today have no personality. Henry Cavill, Chris Evans, Channing Tatum, are really just bland generics. Hudson was exceptionally handsome, but he was also a movie star who lived at a time when that meant something special. It's one thing to be handsome, but to be a charismatic presence is something else. Hudson was a presence.
Audiences actually went to see a Rock Hudson movie, but they don't go to see a Henry Cavill film because there is no such thing [and that goes for the others listed there]. Hudson was a real movie star.
