. . . the Rock Hudson

Doris Day pairing. I realize that statement will probably get me some negative responses, given what a beloved classic movie couple they are. I mean, he's charming and she's cute in their films together, but I don't see a great romantic/sexual chemistry there. I much preferred him opposite Elizabeth Taylor (
Giant
), Gina Lollobrigida (
Come September
,
Strange Bedfellows
) and Claudia Cardinale (
Blindfold
,
A Fine Pair

I agree with you about not having any chemistry with Doris. Doris' best roll was with Jimmy Stewart in "The Man W2000ho Knew Too Much" (IMHO), but it wasn't chemistry she had with Jimmy, it was just the way the two actors had brilliantly portrayed their roles. I like Doris Day but I don't believe she really had chemistry with any actor; perhaps it was a stereotyped image she had, as the girl next door.
I too agree that Liz and Rock had chemistry in "Giant" but Liz was an incredible actress, and had chemistry with many of her leading men.
I too am going to "get it" for stating this; Rock's acting wasn't the best. He was a leading man and was able to command top leading roles mainly because he was so incredibly good looking. (IMHO, he was one of the best looking men, ever to grace any screen.) His acting improved, as he aged and he gave pretty decent performances in the series "McMillan and Wife".

I agree. It's because Doris Day was too goody two shoes to have any sexual chemistry with many of her leading men.
Rock Hudson had better chemistry with Elizabeth Taylor and was better served with ladies who had more sex appeal than Day. I wish he had worked with Ava Gardner, Kim Novak [not counting THE MIRROR CRACK'D], Marilyn Monroe and many of the beauties of the 50s.
Some teaming's just had that undeniable sexual chemistry [Bogart and Bacall, Powell and Loy, Garland and Kelly, etc]. I'm not saying that Hudson and Day were not a good team and didn't work well together, but I don't see why any of Hudson's characters would waste time with her.
I disagree with Hudson being cast just because he was handsome. I'm not saying Hudson was versatile, but he was a solid and dependable actor. His early roles as a star were better than the parts Tony Curtis was doing at the time.
