Whoa! Are you serious? You do know that tips are how waiters and waitresses make the bulk of their income, right? They are usually only paid about $2 per hour, it's the tips that provide their income. Please don't tell me you have been stiffing your waiter all these years. That would just bepathetic.

'I am not defending his actions, but rather his right to a private life.'
So, his life is public when he chooses, and private when he chooses. Can't have it both ways. And it's interesting how stars like him receive the undying benefit of a doubt, but 'ordinary' people don't.
I would like to think that somebody as lucky and fortunate would be more grateful and humble, instead of rude.
And giving to "charity"(etc.) has nothing to do with one's personal character; Joan Crawford gave to charity also to promote her nice image.

My father served in New Guinea with the 2nd AIF (Australian Army) and could remember Hope and Crosby entertaining the troops. He said Hope was very approachable while Crosby wb68as stand offish (although this may have been shyness on Crosby's part, Hope had more of a working class upbringing).

Well, Bing Crosby could be stand-offish, and was known as a loner. On the other hand he was also kind and generous.
Aside from two unreliable authors, I've never really heard anything that was outrageously negative about Bob Hope. While, Hope himself admitted to not being a saint, many who knew him said he was really no different than how he was on the screen, and that he rarely had a feud with a co-star or co-worker.

My father served in New Guinea with the 2nd AIF (Australian Army). He was in Port Moresby when Hope and Crosby went there. He said that Hope was the more gregarious of the two, Crosby being stand offish.

I do not doubt any of these stories about Hope's temperament, but there are countless stories of his kindness, support and generosity. I am impressed by the fact that there are no stories, as far as I know, of him clashing with any of his co-stars. Many of his peers like Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour, Jack Benny, George Burns, Judy Garland, John Wayne, George Murphy, Fred MacMurray, James Stewart, Danny Kaye, Margaret O'Brien, Mickey Rooney, W.C. Fields, Jimmy Durante and Sammy Davis Jr all had fond memories of him.
The truth probably lies somewhere in between.

Bob Hope was also the victim of some ruthless and self-serving biographies. One of them by J. Lawrence Quirk claimed that Hope hated Jack Benny because Benny was homosexual. There has been nothing to indicate that Benny was homosexual.
But more importantly, Hope and Benny were close friends until the latter's death in 1974.
I'm not denying stories of Hope's temperament or arrogance, but let's keep in mind that there were authors like Quirk who liked to spread things about celebrities for fun. But for one negative story about Hope, there are dozens more about his kindness, humor and generosity.

Here are some recollections from Hope's writers.

The writers don't shy away from Hope's stinginess etc, and he was a taskmaster, but a loyal one. Hope appears to have been a contradictory figure [he was well known for his generosity as well as his stinginess]. He held his own with his co-stars and appear238s never to have had a problem with any of them.
