I suspect it has something to do with Ted Danson walking in and getting top billing for the show. She's been there the whole time and earned her stripes. She should be the lead character at least in the opening credits.

I think Sam Malone - I mean Ted Danson - brings an interesting approach to the show when he can do his hippie thing.
Maybe Marg will have an FBI spin-off from CSI. Or maybe the paycheck of a regular show where she is somewhat second banana (to a third top banana again) isn't worth it. I'd suggest she should do only TV movies following up Catherine Willows in her FBI againt phase so the audience can catch up. That way it would be promoted as an event each time. Columbo was a series of TV movies. That might be the way to go, and also she won't be locked down to a weekly gig.
And I still say Marg's face is the basis for the girl in this:

Am I wrong or out of line to think that Marg was asked to leave (probably nicely) because she has "aged out" of the "40ish hottie" character, and the show wants a youngish cast? Also, she's had some scary bad plastic surgery in the last couple of years, which is a shame: I always thought she was very attractive and didn't need it. (But I understand the whole Hollywood paradigm, where your paycheck depends on how well you "fool" the camera into thinking you are 10-15 years younger than you really are.)
BTW: I have to be honest and say this show once my favorite! jumped the shark a couple of years even before WIlliam Petersen left.

Considering they brought in granpa Ted Danson I doubt her age was a factor.

Yeah, plus Elizabeth Shue is only a few years younger than Marg. Only difference is that she hasn't had any surgery done which is admirable IMO. Marg still is a key member of this show. Bad enough Dourdan left. Then Petersen (Which was a HUGE hit to me as a fan), and then Marg????? It should have stayed the way it was in season 10-11 if Grissom left. I mean Fishburne yea but Helgenberger should have stayed on as lead night shift CSI and til this day. Not DB Old Man Fisherman Russell.
