I agree, Heflin was a great actor - but not one prone to scandal-making headlines and that's probably part of the reason he's not as5b4 well remembered today (other than by classic-movie buffs).

I think that's the word for him.
You know how certain people - in life as well as in cinema - never really draw attention to themselves, but when they're missing, you just can't imagine anyone else filling their place? That's Van.

I became aware of him just recently in East Side, West Side, in which I was struck by the incredibly sympathetic character he played and I just saw Johnny Eager, where, as far as I'm concerned, he stole the show as Robert Taylor's forever drunk but good-hearted friend. I'm very happy to have "discovered" him.

The more films I see with Van Heflin, the more I appreciate him. It is unfortunate that he is not better remembered today. He had such a unusual screen presence, not fitting into the traditional "heart-throb" leading man mold, yet not a stock character actor either. He looks rough, yet could bring out his character's vulnerability. He presents a lot of contradictions in his characters and in his screen presence, which is perhaps part of what makes him so interesting. I'm looking forward to seeing more of his films.

He was very appealing..and had charisma..why they didn't think he was attractive is beyond me. Loved him in possessed with Joan Crawford. He does every role he's ever played in justice..He stands out from the rest.. with a recognizable voice when you hear it..very distinguished.
