    Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Greta Garbo

    mkmkmkmkmkmkmk — 18 years ago(January 24, 2008 10:02 AM)

    I just read in "Greta Garbo: A Cinematic Legacy" on page 63/65 that she had a public dispute with Marion davies. It made me wonder who she didn't like, beside Davies?

        yeap she thought Clark was a wooden actor and he thought she was a snob 😛 I beleve she didn't like Joan Crawford, or the other way around.. eitherway I think in Grand Hotel, they weren't too nice to each other.

              Joan loved Greta, she met GG on the stairs whilst they were preparing to shoot Grand Hotel, Greta took Joan's little face in her hand and said "I am sorry we have no scenes together". Joan later said GG was so beautiful that if you was ever going to turn into a lesbian that was the time.
              Gable and Greta did get along thats just a myth of hollywood.
              The only person I know for sure GG refused to meet was Ingred Bergman, she said why should I talk to her just becasue she is Swedish.
              GG and Dietrich had sort of a feud though I think it was more Dietrich that had a problem.

                    Did she ever meet Bette Davis?

                      No, they never met. Bette said in an interview toward the end of her life that she deeply admired her and that she tried to meet her on a number of occasions, particularly after her retirement, but Garbo behaved very elusively and eluded any possible meeting with Bette. I'm not sure whether Garbo was aware that Bette was trying to meet her of if it were her own staff that prevented it, but no, they never met.

                          True there is absolutely no record of any frictions between Garbo and Crawford on the set of "Grand Hotel". Quite to the contrary. What is known is that Joan Crawford worshipped Garbo and had the utmost respect for her. She even presented a documentary on Garbo in the 1960s (prepared by the great film historian Alexander Walker and it was quite extraordinary (unfortunately they did not include this documentary on the Garbo DVD collection back in 2005 as they had originally announced). It is well known that Garbi he was Joan's model as actress, beauty and star. Joan recalled their meeting during the making of "Grand Hotel" describing what an extraordinary experience it was to see Garbo's magnificent face so close and that Garbo expressed her regret that they had no scenes together in the film. In a book I have on Edmound Goulding who directed "Grand Hotel" he also recalls another groupe meeting with all the team (actors and actresses of "Grand Hotel" where Garbo and Crawford were present and says that the attmosphere during the meeting was very pleasant and that Garbo chatted cheerfully with the cast and mostly with Joan. Garbo was not antagonistic at all towards the other actresses, she did her work and kept to herself. Plus she and Joan were great professionals. Garbo was widely admired by most of her contemporaries including Crawford, Louise Brooks, Davis, Hepburn, Bergman etc and there are no records of her expressing her animosity towards another fellow actress or actor.

                            Likewise, I hear that Joan and Garbo got on very well, both had immense respect for each other.

                              I have never heard of them having more than 2 words, together. Their scenes on
                              Grand Hotel
                              were shot separatelyand they did not socialize together. I read in one book that Crawford's record-playing in her dressing room which was nearby actually annoyed Garbo.
                              The only way I've read about Garbo even mentioning Crawford (aside from that stairwell incident) was when, at a party, Tennessee Williams told Garbo the synopsis of a screenplay he wanted to write, called
                              The Pink Bedroom
                              , and she said it would be more suited to Crawford. (But since I don't know what that story was about, I don't know what it implies, as to how Garbo saw Crawford's image.)

                                didn't Tennessee Williams say about Garbo "even a drag queen can act better than her" after she turned down the movie version of 'Streetcar Named Desire'?
                                also I've read that Garbo didn't like Ingrid Bergman that much because she felt Ingrid took most of her roles that she turned down, most importantly Joan of Arc.
                                but I've also heard that she got along well with Marlene Dietrich (surprisingly), Mae West, Katharine Hepburn, and Judy Garland.

                                  Garbo was fascinated by Mae West when they met, and I read that she only met Katharine Hepburn once. But Judy Garland, I don't know anything about her and Garbo.

                                    Hepburn was interviewed by Dick Cavett in the early 70's and said they'd met 'many times'. (link here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C2Qj8UHiEHY ). It's also interesting that Hepburn answered the question in the clip, but then artfully steered away from the topic, which leads me to believe that they WERE friends. Garbo was (from what I have read) very reticent about having her friends talk about her publically, so Hepburn answered politely, and then steered the coversation back to herself.

                                      I'll amend my comment in that I have found out that Judy did meet Greta Garbo. It was reported twice at the home of George Cukor.
                                      From the diary of Charles Brackett;
                                      " dinner party as George Cukor's: Ethel Barrymore, Constance 2000Collier, the Minnellis, Bea Lillie, Dorothy Dickson, Fannie Brice, Ivor Novello, Gladys Cooper, Orry-Kelly, Greta Garbo. After dinner Judy sang Ivor's latest song, "When You Come Home Again" and his first song "Keep the Home Fires Burning," to Ivor's accompaniment sang them with the beautiful simiplicity she has achieved, then went into other songs. Beatrice L. did a number or two "
                                      And then Hedda Hopper inaccuratly claimed this;
                                      "Judy Garland never met Garbo until after her suspension. She dined at George Cukor's with Greta and Katherine Hepburn. After dinner, Judy sat at Garbo's feet"
                                      5-31-1949 - Hedda Hopper

                                        I read some bios of Crawford and in one there is something on their relations. It is said that during the filming of "Grand Hotel" Garbo acted like a star, even though Joan was quite fascinated. One day she however gladly met Joan herself, and there was written that Joan said if she would ever become a lesbian, it would be then. She felt she was recognized and felt it was a honour, I guess. So, from what I read, I would not tell she disliked Garbo.
