Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Joel Coen

Strikes me that in addition to their m5b4any great collaborations (John Goodman, Steve Buscemi) they've also got a decent list of actors they've only worked with once.
Here's a list of them, feel free to add to it, though obviously what defines a great actor is subjective:

    1. Tim Robbins (The Hudsucker Proxy, 1994).
    2. Paul Newman (The Hudsucker Proxy, 1994, sadly the opportunity has passed, RIP).
    3. Philip Seymour Hoffman (The Big Lebowski, 1998, will also not get that opportunity again RIP).
    4. Albert Finney (Miller's Crossing, 1990).
    5. Geoffrey Rush (Intolerable Cruely, 2003).
    6. Gabriel Byrne (Miller's Crossing, 1990).
    7. David Thewlis (The Big Lebowski, 1998, one of the great collaborations I always forget).
    8. William H. Macy (Fargo, 1996).
    9. Brad Pitt (Burn After Reading, 2008).
    10. James Gandolfini (The Man Who Wasn't There, 2004).
    11. John Malcovich (Burn After Reading, 2008, most likely one of these Burn After Reading Actors will go on to work with them again).
    12. Barry Pepper (True Grit, 2008).
    13. Michael Stuhlberg (A Serious Man, 2009).
    14. Richard Kind (A Serious Man, 2009).
    15. Dan Hedaya (Blood Simple, 1984).
    16. John Getz (Blood Simple, 1984).
Additionally there as some, in my opinion, good actors like Tom Hanks, Matt Damon and Nicolas Cage who have only been in one Coen brothers movie. One interesting thing I notice is that they often don't recast their leads111c which helps you sink into each new character. If they do they often wait a long time before recasting them (Jeff Bridges) or they recast them in supporting roles (John Turturro, Josh Brolin). Many of these actors have passed their peak and it would be great to see them work with the Coen Brothers again, especially Tim Robbins.

Great list! Man, it would be
      amazing
to see them work with Albert Finney again. That guy is just fantastic on screen, and usually so under-used by other directors. What a performance in Miller's Crossing though. I would be incredibly excited to see Geoffrey Rush work with them again too!

Terrific list. I agree that Tim Robbins would be great in another Coens film. Also, I would love to see Michael Shannon work with the Coen Brothers. Also, there are two actresses I would love to see work with them again: Julianne Moore and Catherine Zeta-Jones. I thought Catherine Zeta-Jones and George Clooney were hysterical together.
