John Cazale in my opinion has to be the most underrated professional of all time. I can not believe he never recieved a single Academy Award nomination. He was great in "Dog Day Afternoon", the "Godfather", "Deerhunter" what a talent. If he did not pass away so early in his career I am sure we would have seen monumental work from this consumate professional. He was absolutely great. Funny Pacino caused his death in one movie and killed him in another.b68

He was great but not amazing. But to hold your own with then legends De Niro, Hackman, Pacino etc does say a lot. I would've loved to see what else he could've done had he not gotten sick and died. He was talented in supporting roles.
Nothing is as it seems so I wouldn't judge by what you think you see. -

Right. He is very celebrated and uniquely regarded. Same thing when PSHoffman died and people said he was underrated. Absolutely not, he was in tons of movies and was very appreciated by the community and critics alike. I think you mean to say he may not be known by as many people because of his understated performances but he is definitely not underrated.

I agree, Cazale was a really fine actor. I think what may have hurt him most, regarding lack of nominations, is he worked with and was surrounded by so many heavyweights and (at the time) slightly better known actors. I remember when I was younger, I would always refer to Cazale as "that other guy in (insert movie name here)"
But what a short, compact, major run he had.
