John was truly the pioneer of independent film in America. I respect him enormously for that alone. He was also a fine actor and director. Recently saw him in an episode of "Columbo" with one of his best friends Peter Falk, who we sadly recently lost, in "Etude in Black". Nice to see that his kids have become filmmakers themselves. Shame that he died so young from alcoholism, his liver finally gave out. He could have lived another 10-30 years
