I have only seen two Cassavettes films: Shadows and Killing of a Chinese Bookie. I did not think that either of them were great, but I found them both very, very interesting; I liked their style. Watching them made me think, "This movie was not a masterpiece, but this guy is a very good director." What do you think is his best film?

I've seen them ALL his films on the big screen at a special retro (except
MINNIE AND MOSKOWITZ
) and my faves are in this order:HUSBANDS
(1970) NEVER will you see such chemistry on screen. CASSAVATES, PETER FALK, BEN GAZZARA are all SUPERBLOVE STREAMS
(1984) A touching and poignant story see it!SHADOWS
(1958) The seminal Indie, raw,A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE
(1974)GLORIA
(1980)OPENING NIGHT
(1972)FACES
(1968)THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE
(1976)
I have always loved him as an actor, as a man (for his political activism and convictions) and as a director. To this day, I cannot cease to marvel at his films and he, wife GENA ROWLANDS and best pals FALK, GAZZARA and SEYMOUR CASSEL are my favorite acting troupe. They were all so great in his films. -

I've seen 4 thus far:
- Faces
- Woman Under the Influence
- Shadows
- Husbands (on the Starz Channel)
Must mention A CONSTANT FORGE, a 3 hour doc from Criterion about his work. It took me too long to "discover" his directorial films but I'm plowing through.
THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE is on tap for tomorrow.

- Minnie and Moskowitz 10/10
- Faces 9/10

Killing of a Chinese Bookie is defanitely my favorite from him. And it is one of my favorite mob movies (maybe not my FAVORITE, but it is up there).
Then comes "Husbands"
Then comes "Love Streams"

- Faces
- Husbands
- A Woman under the Influence
- Opening Night
- Shadows
Then it becomes quite random, a question of moods, but I like them all, the only one I haven't seen is LOVE STREAMS, but I will try to get it as soon as possible, there's a french DVD-Release (Code 2) by the way.
Cheers

I just completed a course on Cassavetes and his films. We watched all his films except for Big Trouble. My order now would have to be the following:
Love Streams
A Woman Under The Influence
Husbands
Opening Night
Faces
Shadows
Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Gloria
Too Late Blues
A Child Is Waiting -

It's great to see how many people realise just how important Faces is/was, probably the greatest USA-ian film of all time.
- Faces
- A Woman Under The Influence
- The Killing of a Chinese Bookie (original cut)
- Opening Night
- Shadows
Putting a film at the bottom of the list is quite difficult, especially considering that Shadows is one of the best USA-ian films of the 50s.
Truly brilliant film-maker.

Why not just say American instead of USA-ian? That sounds sorta wierd. I haven't seen HUSBANDS, TOO LATE BLUES, A CHILD IS WAITING and BIG TROUBLE.
A WOMAN UNDER THE INFLUENCE
MINNIE AND MOSKOWITZ
LOVE STREAMS
THE KILLING OF A CHINESE BOOKIE (love both cuts the same)
OPENING NIGHT
SHADOWS
FACES
My top 20:
