Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Dean Cain

    OrdinaryDay — 15 years ago(April 05, 2011 06:38 PM)

I really enjoyed his performance in LOIS AND CLARK and I remember watching this show during its initial run, and thinking that Dean was destined for big things. Seriously, I thought he was great and I honestly believed he would become a huge Hollywood above the title star, in huge blockbusters!
Whilst Dean Cain has a very fine filmography and would still be filthy rich, alas, he never became a huge star in his own right. Post-Lois and Clark the majority of his work has been low budget direct to video action movies. Whilst I have enjoyed his performances in the few that I have seen, I can't help but wonder why on earth he never became a HUGE action star in the league of Stallone, Bruce Willis, etc.
Why do you think it never happened? Is it because he became famous for appearing in a tv show, and like lots of other tv stars, they have trouble transitioning over to movies and becoming big movie stars? Or something entirely different? How come Dean never became a huge star?
Definition of troll on IMDb - anyone who expresses a view different to mine.

cos as u said he was just another tv star in a tv show who happened to be very goodlooking, theres a million and one others like him on tv.To think he was going to end up on the ranks of stallone or bruce willis was kinda a bit far thinking[though not impossible].

chris reeves actually turned down all the major hollywood classic blockbusters of 80s and early 90s and 2000s-,American Gigolo,Body Heat,Hannibal,Splash,Romancing the Stone,The Running Man,Total Recall,The Blue Lagoon,The World According to Garp,Fast Times at Ridgemont High,Splash,Fatal Attraction,Lethal Weapon, Pretty Woman.
i would safely say his poor choices after superman and not his superman role itself damaged his career,as margot kidder says the 'curse' is nonsense,it didnt harm ned beatty or gene hackman

I expected Cain to do better but although he has been busy he never had another breakout hit on tv after Lois & Clark.
            Its that man again!!

I wouldn't say he's "awful" as some have stated here. But speaking for myself he just can't hold my interest very long, even though he's nice to look at it. I think it's great he keeps on working as much as he has.

I highly doubt the Scott Peterson role helped his career. He looked too much like him. I bet if you show a bearded photo of Dean Cain to someone on the street, they would assume it was a photo of Scott Peterson.

I think a very big part of why he hasn't become a bigger star is that he has a son that he wants to spend as much time with as possible. He's said it many times that his son is him main priority and spending time with him is what he wants to do. He doesn't take months long jobs; it's not worth it to him. The smaller projects allow him more time off. When he did Lois and Clark, he worked extremely long days 5 or 6 days a week. He's still extremely busy if you look at the 16d0sheer number of projects he has going at one time.

Actually, there are better actors than Dean Cain.

I foundb68 Cain to have a cute boyish look about him and though he was very good looking. His looks and some charisma were his main appeal.

Very few actors who started off on TV later became HUGE Hollywood movie stars, at least for a few years
Male stars that started off in TV that I can think of :
CLINT EASTWOOD (was on Rawhide 1959-1966)
                                BURT REYNOLDS (on Gunsmoke 1962-1965)
                                BRUCE WILLIS (Moonlighting)
STEVE McQUEEN (on Wanted Dead or Alive, 1958-1961)
                                ROGER MOORE (The Saint)
                                JAMES GARNER (Maverick, Rockford Files)
What other TV stars became BIG movie stars ?
In all fairness, Moore and Garner started off in movies, then made it big on TV, and then went back to movies. Garner actually went back and forth a lot between both in the 1960s and 1970s.
