Just saw the 2nd part of this great 3 parter on the BBC last night and nearly the whole episode was taken up about Arbuckle and the beep he went through.I hope the re-enaction they did was true because I felt really sad for this guy by the end.It looked like he was on his way back up and about to make his first feature and he ended up dying in his sleep.
His life would make a great movie.Has there any been made about him?

I watched it as well and looked up the case on wikepedia seems like Virginia Rappe was a bit of a slut who shagged alot of men. In the case of a movie she appeared in, She was getting it on with the cast and crew members which lead to Pubic lice getting around the set of a Mack Sennett movie he subsequently blamed her for it. I'm not saying it was'nt tragic what happened to her but maybe if she was'nt so easy and apparently having a number of abortions along with the drinking she may have lived a lot longer. As for Roscoe Arbuckle he was clearly being stitched up sad very sad.

I saw this as well. I knew about the case before but few of the details..if what Paul Merton said is true then what happened was an absolute tragedy.
By all accounts Mr arbuckle was a genuinely nice guy and it is to Buster Keaton's credit that he stood by him. that we should all have friends like that.
Nothing ever changes, does it? the scumbag gutter press will still say any old thing to sell more paper, simply adding words like "allegedly" or "It is believed" or "A source has claimed" to absolve themselves of any responsibility. -

What puzzles me is why didn;t the powerful Movie executives protect their cash cow? - Arbuckle was worth a fortune to them - and yet they failed to protect their investment
Or was this Cukor's revenge for the dinner party joke?

I've just finished watching this on BBC iPlayer. Very tragic how he was treated =(
I never heard o238f this comedian before tbh (only the American restaurant!!)
Anyway, I really enjoyed this and I think Paul Merton did a great job. Roscoe seemed like a really nice guy and had an important place in the history of Hollywood.
It would be really cool if his story was turned into a movie. Any news on this at all?MoXoM

At the time that Arbuckle was being tried (if what he was put through could be called a trial) there was already a swirl of controversy and panic over morality in movies and the public perception of movie stars living "immoral" lives. If the studio had stepped in to "protect their investment", it could have caused even more backlash against the studios in the long term. Some people point to the Arbuckle scandal as being the major driving force behind the establishment of the Hays Code, and it's an opinion that's hard to disagree with.
