Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Anthony Perkins

There have been two books written about Anthony Perkins - "Anthony Perkins : A Haunted Life " by Ronald Bergin, and "Split Image : the Life of Anthony Perkins" by Charles Winecoff. I have copes of both, and am finding both to be enjoyable; I would like to know what others think of them.

The Charles Winecoff one is not a favorite among fans, including me. I haven't read it in years but I was very disappointed in it.
I didn't like how he constantly bad mouthed Perkins throughout the book. He criticizes EVERYTHING he does and appears to be more interested on the bad elements of his character. Now, it's true that Perkins was a complex human being, but others have noted that he comes off very unpleasant in this book. There are several stories of Perkins as a charming and pleasant man to work with and be around, but it's not really touched upon here. I remember some claims of inaccuracy with the book, but I can't remember the details. Winecoff might not be lying about the bad stuff [Perkins could be difficult], but he is one sided from what I remember.
Bergan's book is better, but it's weighed down by endless discussions of the similarities between Perkins and Norman Bates.
I suppose the definitive biography has yet to be written.
