Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Peter O'Toole

Very sorry to hear about Peter O'Toole's death. He was one of the last of the hellraisers and a fine actor.
Can we, though, put paid to the legend that he was born in Ireland. His birth certificate clearly states he was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire. His father was Irish and his mother Scottish. I suppose, like Greer Garson, he preferred to say he was born in Ireland though quite definitely born in England. Ms Garson was born in Essex, I believe.

That's true. And his middle wasn't Seamus, but James. I'm not where Seamus came from - maybe O'Toole himself.

Seamus is Gaelic for James. Either he changed it back to sound more Celtic, or it was Anglicized to James by a registrar when he was born. Probably the best known Seamus in recent times is Nobel winning poet Seamus Heaney who died a few months before O'Toole did.
