The operation is an escalation in the war that has been going on for almost two years and is expected to increase the death toll and exacerbate the humanitarian catastrophe in the enclave.
The US state secretary, who is in Jerusalem, says his meeting with the families of captives held in Gaza had been “sobering”.
“Their stories are heartbreaking and unfathomable,” Rubio said in a post on X.
“This war has gone on long enough,” he added. “Hamas must immediately release all the hostages: living and deceased.”
The comments came as Axios, a US outlet, citing Israeli officials, reported that Israeli forces have launched their ground offensive to “occupy Gaza City” after weeks of relentless air attacks. The outlet cited an Israeli official as saying that Rubio “didn’t pull the brakes on the ground operation”.
