I liked him a lot in The Proposition and in Dead Man. Small roles, but both great performances.

John Hurt was terrific as the troubled priest in
              Confession
, opposite Kiefer Sutherland as the hit man in the confession booth. It was a multi-part series made specifically for internet video (Hulu).
              Spoilers in clip:

Just before his death he played the titular character of 'The Invisible Man', an audio-drama produced by Big Finish Productions. John Hurt is well known for his deep, raspy, almost croaky voice, and he was great at playing the deranged scientist of Dr Griffin.
In a medium where the only string to your bow is how you sound, John Hurt was a perfect choice to play the Invisible Man, and while the audio drama isn't released yet, the first 'chapter' is available for free, and it's already great to hear.
