drugs release dopamine - which makes you feel GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOD! and everything else compared to that is, meh
also successful actors are usually incredibly sensitive perfectionists - it helps them escape an imperfect, non-understanding world. boosts their confidence, they have fragile egos.

there is a line from one of his final films "A Most Wanted Man" that seems to apply to Hoffman -
every good man has a little bit of bad, doesn't he ? And in Abdullah's case, that little bit of bad, just might kill you.
