I'm posting this here because I'd like to ask a question about the Canadian film system. Roger Ebert slams The Brood in his review, and says, 'What's the purpose of this film (other than to serve as a tax shelter, of course)?' Could someone please explain this? Is this about the reality of the way Canadian films are/were funded, or is it some kind of stereotype?

I don't think it defines the entire Canadian film system, but there are certain government programs/film companies that fund Canadian filmmakers. Cronenberg is one filmmaker who takes advantage of these programs to make his movies.
Think of it like a college student using government scholarships.
Let's be bad guys.
