It doesn't matter. When Cronenberg dies and more and more people start to look at his entire body of work, they'll realize that he's an incredibly consistent filmmaker and one of the best to have ever lived.

These awards mostly represent a middlebrow's idea of a prestigious film, often combining melodramatic acting with a social agenda - everything Cronenberg deplores. He's one of the greatest film directors, a true auteur (not just ego inflated b.s.), with a challenging, truly imaginative body of work. Society is just more and more dumbed-down - sad but true.
