Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Mel Brooks

I don't think there's such a thing as a bad film, or even a mediocre film in Brooks's filmography. However nothing comes even close to those 3 early films. The Producers, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein. I mean any of those 3 movies can easily be called the greatest movie of all time, but everything that followed never quite lived up. Sure there are pants peeing hilarious moments in Space Balls but nothings seemed as original as what he was doing in Blazing Saddles. It's like he just applied the formula to different material after that. Blazing Saddles is hilarious but it's not what makes it so ingenious, it was just so original and fresh. Is it like the case with Francis Ford Coppola where you outdo yourself in filmmaking so early on that everything else can't compare?

Probably because you can only be original once. The later films took on targets that weren't as strong. Also, he had different cast members in his films that weren't regulars, so that might've been an issue. His later films are not terrible, but you are always comparing it to his earlier work, where he really went nuts with some films.
