and what was your impression?
I was seventeen and still living at home when I saw 3 Women on cable one night. I was actually channel surfing and stopped there because it was unlike anything I'd ever seen before. I remember laughing heartily at Duvall's and Spacek's funniest lines and then being left completely chilled by the ending. 3 Women was shown repeatedly during that time so I ended up taping it so I could watch it againand again. Around that same time I also saw Welcome to L.A. on the same channel and noticed Altman's name as a producer on it. Loved Welcome to L.A. also. Then The Player was released theatrically and I knew I had to see it. Loved it (although my date didn't). Short Cuts came out the following year (becoming one of my favorite movies) and then Pret a Porter the year after that (I thought it was amusing). I also rented Nashville during this time and thought it too was amazing. Been a fan ever since.
We'll see whose the filthiest person alive! We'll just see! -

The Long Goodbye on TV when I was 14 or something. Obviously, I knew nothing of Altman, but I recall that - as a Chandler fan - I was not displeased with the movie. Liked it.
The next encounter was probably around 2004 when I caught Gosford Park & thought it was boring as sh-t. Turned it off half way through. Last year, now already a confirmed Altda0man fan, I watched it again and ended up rating it 8/10 - still a bit too talky and mannered perhaps, but otherwise very powerful.
In fact, most of his films seem to be getting better with repeat viewings - I wasnt initially much impressed with Short Cuts either, but now having seen it about 5 times, I think its one the best films of the 90s.
