We know he won 2 best director oscar5b4s for Shindler's List and Saving Private Ryan. And that's it. Spielberg will go down as the greatest director of all time. 2 Oscars seems light. I think he should have got the Award for Jaws and Indiana Jones, let anybody else take the same script and those movies won't fly. Hollywood has always been jealous of the most talented. The same was true of Spielberg.

Two is definitely light for Spielberg.
The fact that he was not even nominated for Best Director for
Jaws
speaks to the ways "new" directors had to break their way in to the club, kind of like how Martin Scorsese was snubbed the next year for
Taxi Driver
. Both of those are consummate "director's pictures," too.
Raiders of the Lost Ark
is a great pick.
I know Ang Lee is a celebrated filmmaker but his post1c84-2000 output has left me cold, and consequently I will probably always find it at least somewhat curious that he defeated Spielberg both with the
Brokeback Mountain
vs.
Munich
matchup as well as seven years later with
The Life of Pi
vs.
Lincoln
, and almost stranger still, Lee's films both lost in the Best Picture category those years, so it was almost like double-the-snubs for Spielberg, whose films went home without Best Director or Best Picture honors.
