He dealt with a divorce, remarriage, kids, etc. Plus, his father died after a long bout with Alzheimer's. Family is supposed to come first. Like someone said, he doesn't crank out a movie every year like Sandler, who has one hit for every 9 turds.
That said, Myers does have a reputation for being insecure, and according to his biographer he did steal lines from Dana Carvey in Wayne's World, which led to some tension. Dana was the established star at the time, and Myers had some difficulty sharing the spotlight. He actually wanted Garth to be a cameo character and for the movie to just follow Wayne.
So, yeah, he probably comes off as a douche, but it's also because he's an extreme perfectionist who wants to produce a good product. He backed out of the "Sprockets" movie, turning down $20 million because the script was so bad. It must have been awful, if he turned it down, and thought "Love Guru" was releasable.
