Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Wes Craven

When I read about the development of Scream 4, Wes Craven said he would only do it if the script was really strong. Well, clearly, the script was not strong at all. It was jumbled garbage with all the "rules" of horror movies becoming a tangled mess with rules on top of rules and a reinvention of rules. What a mess! The movie really failed to capture what was good about the first and even second one. I think the reality of the situation was that Craven probably had little else going on and he saw doing a fourth Scream movie as a chance to recapture some box office glory and garner some attention in the press. I mean, could he not see how crappy the script was? How could he possibly think this was good?
Plus, if we're being honest, it's not like any of the Scream movies were skillfully directed like a Tarantino or Terrence Malik film. These movies just run on a standard formula. It feels like anyone could have directed these movies. I think its laughable that the studio recruited Wes Craven to craft this chapter in this franchise, as if no one else could have done it.

      I disagree.
I'm sorry, but I think that a Tarantino or Mallick wouldn't be able to pull out a nightmare on elm street or a last house on the left
