I never understood how he made the masterpiece that was nightmare on elm street and then proceeded to beep it up with a boatload of crappy sequels. Just.. what happened?

It's been reported he was never interested in making the Freddy films into sequels. When he was brought in to help write the third film, his intention was to make that the last Nightmare film. However, the creative powers overruled him and continued making more crappy sequels with Fred Krueger.

I'm pretty sure they were all out of his hands, as it usually is. He co-wrote
          Dream Warriors
but disliked the result. Atleast we
          New Nightmare
which is the best best sequel and possibly even better than the original.

He sold off all the rights etc to the first film to get it made so it was completely out of his hands. You should watch Never Sleep Again : The Elm Street Legacy its a a pretty good documentary on the entire series

I think the only Sequel that he directed in that Franchise was "
                NEW NIGHTMARE
" and I actually liked that Movie.
