Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Nicolas Cage

    The Movie Lady — 5 years ago(January 09, 2021 11:06 PM)

I know he's along the path of Travolta, Willis, Seagal, JCVD, etc. with all these DTV movies, but why isn't he getting anymore major movies anymore? Did The Wicker Man hurt his career?
Goddamnit, man! You done made me hurt my dick hand. (Phone Booth, 2002)

Here's a quote from an article in
      The Bulwark
this week by Sonny Bunch, who seems to be defending Cage!
This is the heart of the Nicolas Cage Paradox. Because the scripts he accepts are generally of middling quality and because the directors he works with are generally the sort who have yet to make it or will never make it and because the casting budget is frequently so dominated by his own quote it means his supporting actors are of a lesser caliber, Nicolas Cage is often the only thing worth watching in these movies. Sure, the movies are mostly bad; he’s still always doing something fascinating in them, committing wholeheartedly to the part, acting with every muscle in his body rather than just reciting lines.

I love some of the crazy-ass **** Nic Cage has been acting in ever since he fell off the A list. Just saw this one and boy was it a gloriously bonkers blast.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

I thoroughly enjoyed it. It's one seriously bonkers flick!

The last movie where he peaked as an action star/box office draw was around 2000 with Gone in 60 Seconds, after that he spent the rest of the 2000s finding success with Disney/comic book franchise roles and crowd-pleasers. But the cracks began to show around late 2000s/early 2010s when he starred in bomb after bomb, then went into debt with the IRS and resorted to taking straight to DVD roles for the next 10 years to pay off his debts.
He had a career resurgence around 2020 with critically acclaimed performances, but no blockbusters like in his 90s heyday, his days as an A-list leading man are long over.
