I have never thought that Lauren Bacall was beautiful in her youth, I
have always found her to have an ugly attraction. Lauren to me is
very sexy-ugly. -

What an interesting perception of youthful beauty you have. However, I've always thought of Lauren's Russian/Jewish looks as absolutely perilous in terms of sexiness, as well as beauty. Goddamn sexy in my book.
Today's women aspire for an "ideal"! Lauren's beauty was natural and "made-up" (Hollywood makeup), but definitely an original.
All I can say is, expand your tastes.
I'm sure lot's of guys would agree.

Not sure if there is such thing as sexy and ugly, but there is definitely such thing as beautiful-ugly. The French term it
jolie laide
which describes someone so odd looking, they might come off as ugly at first but very beautiful if you look again (Sofia Coppola, Anjelica Huston are among the women that generally falls in this category)
And I see no reason why we can't discuss the aesthetics of Lauren Bacall as much as her talent. I think her look is intriguing and makes interesting analysis. -

There is most definitely an ugly-sexy.. I've known a few, really think about what those two words mean and they are different and not opposing which makes it possible. Being sexy can be attained in action and motion. Really, there is no ugly-beautiful. Those are opposing, opposites if you will (unless you bring in more than one attribute, inside, outside for example). If, as in your example you saw at first ugliness which at second glance became or was noticed to really be beauty than the ugly is no longer there, you then just see beauty. The ugly-sexy do not lose their descriptions no matter how much time passes they can live together and retain their description. Ms. Bacall's not ugly she just made the mistake of appearing with Marilyn Monroe and in that competition, she didn't do well.

Agreed, but with a face like Marilyn's, you can't do well next to pretty much anyone, let alone someone as beautiful as Lauren. She didn't let Monroe stand a chance.
I try to be like Grace Kelly, but all her looks were too -

Bacall was 30 playing 25 in
How to Marry A Millionaire
(a godawful movie I'm slogging through right now), but she looks about 38. I've never understood how this droopy-eyed woman was considered beautiful. -

If we're being very technical HTMAM was released in 1953, so during filming Ms. Bacall had to have been 28 or 29, not yet 30. She was 30 or very close to it in A Woman's World in 1954, and I happen to think she looked attractive and not old in the slightest:

As far as her looking much older in HTMAM in 1953, I have to say that's ludicrous. Facially she did not change very much at all from To Have and To Have Not. Whether the producers disliked her or she felt that she had to look more mature, I do agree with you that she was styled very matronly compared to Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe. This film was in cinemascope. From a distance, her all look - the mousy brown short hair, the prudish outfits - made her appear overly mature, but if you look at1354 close-up stills you'll notice she facially still looked young and gorgeous:

At the film's premier, she looked younger than Marilyn:

I don't think you can put Anjelica Huston into any category that includes the world beautiful. I'm sorry but she looks like a man in drag, with a few too many plastic surgeries gone wrongthere is no easing on the eyes as time goes by with her. -

I know the old cliche is "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" but I have always thought that Angelica Huston was/is (haven't seen her in any recent films) absolutely stunning, and really does represent the term jolie-laide - not chocolate box pretty but eye-catching and compelling.

Wow Geocities. Didn't realize this thread went back so far that you needed a time machine.
I think Lauren Bacall or any actresses from her era with those regal hairstyle had penuche or whatever you spell it, dammit.
Today's women or adolescent so called women all look like cookie 16d0cutter moulds. There is no grace or class. Just a bunch of females trying to out slut one another. Truly sad. -

In Designing Woman, Gregory Peck at one point describes Bacall's character as "That ugly girl."
Bacall isn't really ugly, she was hot but she'd disappear if Ava Gardner was in the same room with her. I'm sure even Bacall herself would admit that. She's shown herself to be a frank woman and sometimes she could actually be frank about herself.
