why did the aliens wait so long?

It's an awfully long time between the end of WWII and the 2000s for the aliens to wait to attack. You'd think they'd have been far superior than humans back in the 40s if they had technology to come to earth.
Waiting wouldn't make sense cause it just gave humans more time to advance and why would they be messing around with simple rockets as Nazis? They already had intergalactic space travel.
