Red Stars weren't associated with communism back then I guess. Although, it doesn't look good know matter how you look at it.

The actual film costume was grey (as was Superman's)as it photographed better. The artist probably didn't have the right color reference to work from.

Well, America was in bed with the commies back thenkind of like how Agent Harris helped Tony Soprano know where Phil Leotardo was so Tony could have Benny clip him (and then of course Phil's SUV tire rolled over his head, causing Phil's head to pop like a grape).
I guess we had no choice, but at least we made sure they bled more than we did so they weren't as strong as they would've been at the end of the war (that would have been a disaster as they would likely have taken all of Europe!).

They have unicorns in that fantasy world you live in? The Russians bled because they were invaded and they made the Germans pay for every inch of ground. They came out of that war far stronger than they were at the beginning, and far more resolved to build a buffer zone around their borders, leading to the Warsaw pact and nearly 40 years of the Cold War. Give credit where it was due. Meanwhile, maybe if both sides had learned to trust each other and work to a better future, we could have avoided the mess that followed the war.
"Fortunately, Ah keep mah feathers numbered for just such an emergency!"
