Don't know if it was in any other incarceration of BatMan, but what it ever explained outside the show how it worked? Did robotic hands strip and then clothe them in seconds? We're their uniforms sprayed on, teleported on
I'm guessing there was an antechamber where they got dressed and then continued sliding down or rocketing back up which looked like an insane amount of energy wasted
Bruce always seemed to have some weird convoluted way of getting to the cave and suiting up, whereas Alfred just takes some stairs or an elevator -

Halfway down, there was an inter-dimensional gateway to DC Comics Earth-2 immediately followed by one back to Earth Prime. Passing through both gateways at such a rapid speed caused a temporary flux in the space time continuum, thus giving Bruce and Dick the time necessary to change into their costumes while on Earth-2 (or vice-versa on the way up). They had to flip the On/Off change switch on the way down to remind them because the trip to Earth-2 required rapid movement through interstellar space and one's immediate short-term memory could often go haywire for a few moments. Flipping the switch activated an device which inserted a 3x5 card in both their hands reminding them to change outfits (again, this was for either sliding down or going up the Batpole). Since it was coded to their DNA specifically, that's why it never worked for anyone else like when the Joker got into the shaft and they kept blasting him up and down.
