I've been watching "Perry Mason" recently, for the first time in eons, and was halfway through episode "The Case of the Black-eyed Blonde." I was busy doing stuff on a laptop while the show was playing on the TV. A woman's voice caught my attention, but when I looked at the TV she didn't look familiar. But I kept watching, and listening, and then had that "ah ha!" moment: it was Phyllis Coates, with long-ish blond hair! She looked so different from AoS I really don't think I'd have recognized her had it not been for her voice.

I don't know! In this particular episode of "Perry Mason" she looked SO different from AoS, I really don't think I would've ever recognized her if not for her voice. Of course, in this particular instance, her voice sounded just like it does in AoS, so that explains that!

I recall that ep, and Coates as a blond is totally diff.
Coates was around in a lot of TV shows, and she usually looks totally diff than she did on AoS, so it is not that easy to notice her, since she is usually playing small supporting roles. -

I'm not sure why you had trouble recognizing her face. To me she was instantly recognizable. And yes, her voice is quite distinctive. In the
Perry Mason
episode her character purposely has a nard-as-nails quality, just like her role in
AoS
.
If you can remember the '60s, then you probably weren't there. -

she was blonde on a lone ranger episode, too. lois lane was not challenging enough for her. maybe because, as that slut lois lane, she had the key to kent's apartment, and that was beneath her acting chops.

Well, Donna Reed won an Academy Award for playing a prostitute in
From Here to Eternity
. It's not a matter of a role's being beneath one's acting chops.

Similarly, Shirley Jones got an Oscar for
Elmer Gantry
, as did Elizabeth Taylor in
Butterfield 8
. (Same year, too.)
It has sometimes been stated that playing a prostitute (or a woman of very low morals) increases one's chances of getting an Oscar. I don't know if anyone has done a statistical analysis. -

Lots of men have gotten Oscars for playing homosexuals, transvestites, retards, or bums.
Dustin Hoffman played a bum, an autistic retard, and a transexual, and got nominated for all and won 2? Tom Hanks got one for playing a HIV lawyer, and a retard.
Lots of others have gotten nominations and wins for playing gays or trannies. -

Yes, someone has done a statistical analysis indicating that 12% of Best Actress Oscars went to actresses playing either prostitutes or mistresses.
In fact, the first ever Best Actress Oscar went to Janet Gaynor, partly for her performance as a prostitute in
Street Angel
. In addition to the ones we've already mentioned, others include Jane Fonda's Bree Daniels in
Klute
and Charlize Theron's Aileen Wuornos in
Monster
. I think there may be a couple more, but that's all I can come up with right now.
