Don't you think this was off-character for Max? He was supossed to be this cunning, intelligent sociopath and businessman, and then they dumb him down with that stupid question?
Other than that, I liked his character, and think he's an underrated villain in the series. I also liked how, when the Penguin crashes at the party and tries to take Chip with him, Max decides to sacrifice himself to save his son. That's a good redeeming quality in a villain.

Max is smart and shrewd, but also very arrogant. And his arrogance could sometimes cloud his judgement. He'd written-off Bruce as an idle trust-fund goody goody, so it was probably hard for him to wrap his mind around the idea that Bruce was so much more.

Max is smart in getting moneyhe lacks common sense. A person being smart in one thing does not mean that they know how to figure out other areas.

It was a good way to address the issue of why no one would suspect Batman is Bruce Wayne.
