To be fair, he thinks he's a college student in 1967, so freezing up when confronted with superheroes and a spaceship isn't actually outside the realm of possibility.

I know he wanted to be a badass but it would have been smarter to stay on the ship and surprise attack them than to shout "Gideon fire everything!" so that they all could hear.

Yeah that was some terrible writing. If he had just stood there frozen it would be one thing, but he actually started running towards the ship with the others, then just stopped in his tracks so he could turn around and look at the villains for absolutely no reason, just so they could nab him.utterly moronic.
