    Nay
There are already Supergirl and the DEO - not to mention the police - to protect National City. Is a vigilante really necessary? I would rather see professionals (Alex & J'onn) assist Supergirl.
His sudden fighting prowess and desire to help as a hero are also unbelievable. Does he REALLY want to help, anyway? Between his job as Catco's CEO (also unbelievable) and his turn as Guardian, he is still finding time to write articles tooting his own horn.
In my opinion, the character unfortunately doesn't serve any purpose on the show, which is on the brink of being overcrowded with wannabe heroes. If he really wants to escape a Super' shadow, he should move to another city where he could be more useful. That would be a good sand-off for the character.

If he was doing it for the reasons he said, because he genuinely wants to help people, then i'd be on board.. This seems more out of self interest to prove himself to people rather than helping others He felt overshadowed by Superman, and Supergirl and sure he cares about people but i call BS on the reason for him doing it.. He talks more about the rush of being out there, and always quick to add his name on the same level of Supergirl as if to reap some of the glory that comes with being a hero.. If he was more humble then yeah, but why the hell should anyone care if he's doing it mostly for his ego..?
He was even willing to put Wynn in danger and btw never showed even a bit of concern when Wynn was attacked.. Again more about him and less about the position he's putting the people who has his back.. Makes me hate his character actually

I don't think the Guardian arc works here. I mean, if National City wasn't such a sunny place already being protected by the police, the DEO and Supergirl and instead we had a corrupt and decaying type of city, like Gotham, then I'd see the need for a vigilante. Right now Guardian, who doesn't have the powers of Supergirl, nor the training and means of the DEO (except what Winn munches of them), just looks like a dumbass who wants to feel good about himself. He would be dead by now if Winn hadn't made that suit for him.
I think the show should have made him Kara's photographer partner at CatCo and they should have let their relationship develop naturally (either have them work out or let them take their time to discover they really don't fit together) without making the show about their romance. That was such a clear path for his character. Instead he has been sidelined into a storyline that really does not work at all except to sort of parallel Mon El, that guy who suddendly came to the show and has more screentime and story that James ever had and is now Kara's love interest to boot.

I think James being the Guardian can work, but they might need to make an example out of one of the writers by sacrificing him to the unemployment line. If I wrote a story that neglected a main character the way these CW writers do with black characters, I'd fall upon my own sword. James needs to be his own man. His only meaning in life shouldn't be getting into Kara's pants or looking up Supergirl's skirt. In addition, if we only see good lines from Alex when it's time to do something gay, I'm going to be upset. They best put some drama between Maggie and Alex at some point because it's getting boring. Shoot. Put the Guardian in between them, and bring on the drama.

Jimmy becoming a superhero was dumb. Kara was right for once.
