It got the Golden Lion for best movie
although best actors went to Italy's Luca Marinelli.
Seems like it'll be an Oscars contender now. However will the press spin it all now?

        Agamotto — 6 years ago(September 10, 2019 03:20 AM)

Wow. I am surprised this ended up being good. The early teasers were not promising. I don't think it will be an Oscar contender because while it is said to be good, most early word also says it is derivative. Taxi Driver is said to be its main inspiration.

While I'd hold that to be true generally Agamotto there are some derivative movies which have won Oscars.
L.A. Confidential (1997) won two Oscars while Chinatown (1974) won only one.
The various Romeo and Juliets (And their derivatives), A Star is Borns and Lord of the Rings movies (Or indeed any movie set in a serial of cinematic undertakings) have all been up for Best Picture or Director over the years.
I have no doubt that this will be a massive homage to Scorsese, perhaps even cringely so, but sometimes Hollywood likes to pat itself on the back and with Scorsese's actual movie
          The Irishman
not likely to be nominated due to only having a 30 days run in cinemas prior to being distributed by Netflix - it might tip Joker into being a contender.
Of course the Academy might change its rules and The Irishmen gets the nomination changing everything making it Scorsese's tenth nomination with
          only
          one win so far.
I'd say it all hinges around the distribution methods used now and whether the old guard will bend the knee this year or pay respect via Joker being nominated.
