I would like to think that they did not panic and fall with fright to their deaths as we see so many aliens do.
    Or anything falling on them.
If we didn't see them die then I would like to think they did unexpectedly and painlessly when Krypton exploded.

That was left vague to spare us, so I'm going with the explosion.
In the comics, at that time things were a lot different. I disliked this part of the movie.
In the comics Krypton was a paradise, it had always been shown that way.
Jor El was a scientist not a lawyer, leader, etc. All the other Kryptonians were super relaxed and sure that the world was great. They had all gotten to the point where they weren't interested in space travel or anything any longer.
So, it was a jaded super advanced society.
Jor El figured out that the planet was going to explore. However, that sounded insane and so no one listened.
That's exactly what would happen so it's a good story.
Jor El was the only person who was no delusional and built the ship for his baby.
In the movie, the planet was horrible looking and seemed like it could explode or fall apart at any minute. So, that took the punch out of it happening
It was also a bit of a plot hole.

It was odd to make Krypton look like a hellhole.
Man of Steel got away from that.
Jor el telling everyone the planet is going to blow up only works if it's a nice place. If it's a dead looking place that has no life on it, then it seems like it would blow up.
In the first movie, it looks like a planet that has run its course.

            A good observation.

I don't know why people think Krypton looked bad in this. I thought it looked great. Granted the planet was going to blow up. That was the story. However I don't why anyone would think Krypton here looked like it would. I thought it looked great.

Agreed and notice how Supes Fortress of Solitude resembles Krypton?
