Why does a film fail?

I liked it, and I thought Phoenix and Gaga were really good together - but I watched the film in an empty cinema - I was the sole occupant of a large and otherwise empty space.
But on Wikipedia you have a series of reducing opening weekend predictions and the film actually slipped in below those. I wonder how they made those figures - are there pollster and focus groups for that sort of thing?
There are noisy people who shout and scream that a film offends them long before it's available to be watched. There are so-called influencers, and even film critics (or at least entitled so) looking to say something controversial because their income depends on being click-baity enough. But I can't believe most of us are dumb enough to be influenced by that.
Then again maybe some people are - and possibly always have been? Which is a depressing thought but so it goes.
I have always depended on the kindness of Strangers - and the bastards let me down!
