These modern monster movies depend heavily on casts full of oblivious (and often willfully oblivious) characters. And there's almost always some variation on the "can't scare away the tourists" theme.

i actually thought the boyfriend character was likable. It seems like whoever wrote the screenplay probably patterned that character after himself. At least that's my theory
