One of the Worst Movies Ever.

I don't agree that it's one of the worst movies ever, but it certainly was irritating. I didn't like the songs - it was unoriginal and forgettable, I didn't like the screenplay, I didn't like the characters and I was tearing my eyeballs when watching the restaurant and medicine act. But I managed to watch through it.

I disagree. The songs were all great but the story was boring about gamblers in NYC. Who can relate to that? Vivian Blaines' character saved the film. The Damon Runyon non-use of contractions (cannot for can't) was irritating. Far from the worst musicals ever but could have been cast better. It was a gamble and Sam Goldwyn lost. Poor acting and dialogue to boot.

Who can relate to that? Why - because you're not a gambler in NYC, decades ago? Why single out this film? There are human traits the characters have, and there are things most human beings experience at one time or another (love, contentious relationships based on misunderstandings, being broke, etc). I'm not a charioteer, but I love Ben-HurI'm not a prophet but I love the Ten CommandmentsI'm not a boxer/madman, but I love Raging Bull.silly post.

I guarantee you NYC did not look like that in the fifties. I am watching this on TCM right now and the scene with Jean in the purple suit and Marlon in the banana tie just passed. her singing is grating.
oh crap, Jean is singing again shoot me now.
Oh God. Fortune

I don't think it was the worst film ever but it was obvious Sinatra didn't want to be there. He didn't try on any of his songs. Jean Simmons and Brando were fine but she was sharp on her songs and he was flat. Vivian Blaine was the only one I enjoyed, but she couldn't carry the film by herself. It was all round a poor attempt at a film. If they'd cut some of the script and used different actors then I think I could place this film on my favourites list. But as is, it just seems like a mess.

It's OK in my book, but certainly no masterpiece.
The strength of this musical, just like many others, are live productions, especially professionally.
Thst said, i was on the stage crew for this 44 years ago in high school, and it was an absolute blast start to finish. Drama clubs are quite the experience. -

I couldn't disagree more with almost everyone here, but here's why..
I watched this film long ago before I knew anything about Brando and I loved it! Then at some point I watched it again and thought, MEH. In the last couple years, I have fully embraced Brando and my personal goal is to see every one of his films, good or bad. So when this was on TCM last night I recorded it and watched about halfI'll finish it tonight. All I can say is "I'M IN LOVE AGAIN!!!"
I will admit it's far from perfect. Jean Simmons' singing isn't very good, if it is her. I have no problem with Brando's singing, if it is him, although I haven't heard "Luck be a Lady" yet either. Sinatra.I don't what he was complaining about, his character gets lots of screen time, good songs, and in many ways more likeable one than Brando's.
But what IS PERFECT is the opening scene: The whole comic book-like street scene, the fabulous Goldwyn Girls and a cacophony of characters weaving in and out in perfect time with a fabulous score leading seamlessly to the newsstand for first number "Can Do." I have no idea if this was the way it was done onstage, but to me this is ABSOLUTE MOVIE MUSICAL PERFECTION!!! -

Stylized, miscast, unlikely, too cute for its own good. I don't hate it, I always like Frank Sinatra and Marlon Brando is a rather interesting choice here. The gaudy dance numbers are always fun to watch. It's not good, mind you, but it's not awful. It's like a box of Kraft macaroni and cheese, it's ok, edible, and sometimes you really enjoy it.

Just a little bit of advice. Whenever someone posts that some movie was the worst movie ever, they sound like a 12 year old who has only seen superhero movies. Believe me, there are much worse movies than this. Much, much worse.
